MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 or better known as MP3 is a sound coding file format that has good compression (even though it is lossy) so that the file size can be smaller. This file was developed by a German engineer Karlheinz Brandenburg. MP3 uses Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) encoding. MP3 reduces the number of bits required by using a psychoacoustic model to remove sound components that are inaudible to humans.

MP3 uses a hybrid transformation to transform signals in the time domain to signals in the frequency domain: 32-band, 36 or 12 MDCT (modified discrete cosine transform) polyphase quadrature filter, with independently selectable sizes for sub-bands 0…1 and 2 …31, Postprocess aliasing reduction.

The MPEG-1 standard does not specifically specify how to encode MP3. Instead, the decode algorithm as well as the file format are specifically defined. Those wishing to implement an MP3 encoder must create their own algorithm to remove part of the information in the original audio file (or in the MDCT representation in the frequency domain).
